Transforming Attics with Custom Shelving by Arbor Furniture:
Based in Bristol Arbor Furniture is a furniture making company that combines traditional woodworking skills and modern techniques. We aim to incorporate craftsmanship and commitment to sustainability in to all of our furniture. We have recently undertaken a project that shows this ethos: custom elm book shelving fitted under the eaves in an attic.
Our customer was looking for a Bristol furniture maker to process and use elm boards from a beautiful elm tree that had had to be felled on their land. They were looking to incorporate the beauty of repurposing the wood from their home and using it to create some fitted furniture. With careful consideration for the environment and a deep respect for the tree’s legacy, we dried and milled the elm at our workshop just outside of Bristol, carefully processing the timber to make sure we used as much of it as possible.
The attic has been transformed with an elm clad entraceway with plenty of storage for books. Creating a warm welcome to the room with the beautiful natural grain patterns. Stepping inside, the fitted elm book shelving spans the walls, celebrating the tree’s character and fitting in with the traditional joinery in the home.
At Arbor Furniture we are dedicated to quality, building furniture that should last a lifetime and have a minimal impact on the planet. The solid elm not only provides a sturdy and durable solution for book storage but also becomes part of the story of the home. Each shelf is meticulously measured and installed, ensuring a perfect fit and a seamless look that adds to the attic’s charm.
What sets this project apart is the story embedded within the elm. The wood, with its rich history makes it more than just a functional space. It becomes a narrative, a living piece of the home, and a symbol of sustainable practices through making things that last instead of being disposable within a few years. Arbor Furniture’s approach highlights the potential of local resources, reducing the environmental impact and fostering a connection between the homeowner and their natural surroundings.
Craftsmanship is an important part of sustainability, and of the stories our homes tell. This project stands as a testament to our ethos of working closely with our customers and putting passion and attention to detail into every piece we create.
